Lockers available in Boatwright Library

60 new lockers, 30 on each of the two basement levels are now available in the library. Lockers are assigned on a first-com, first-served basis for the full spring semester. The lockers are a convenience for students and faculty who are doing work that requires frequent use of library materials in the library sand who would like to store those materials securely at the library. To apply for a locker see Leigh Ann Brosnihan in the administration office on the second floor of Boatwright. Applications must be submitted in person. Applicants must present their UR ID card at the time they apply. For additional information contact Leigh Ann Brosnihan.

New Library Database -- Ancestry Library Edition

The University Libraries are pleased to announce the acquisition of Ancestry Library Edition. This database provides U.S. and British census and immigration records from 1790 - 1930 and it also includes historical maps and photographs. It can be found under "Online Databases" on the library's web site.

Library Catalog Down

The UR Library Catalog will be unavailable on Wednesday, December 20 and Thursday, December 21 due to upgrade maintenance. If you need assistance with the library's collection during this time period, please call the library's reference desk at x8669.

University Librarian Jim Rettig Nominated for President of the American Library Association

University of Richmond Librarian James Rettig is one of two candidates for president of the American Library Association (ALA). Rettig has been with University of Richmond since 1998. He has held a number of elected and appointed positions in ALA, including executive board member, governing council member, chair of the organization and publishing committees, and president of one of its divisions. Rettig holds two master’s degrees, one in English from Marquette University and one in library science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has earned numerous awards for his work, including the ALA’s G.K. Hall Award for Library Literature.

The Chicago Manual of Style Online

The University Libraries are pleased to announce that a subscription to The Chicago Manual of Style Online is now available on your desktop. It is completely searchable and easy to use, providing quick answers to your style and editing questions. The online version also incorporates the popular Chicago Style Q&A, a tools section with sample style sheets, and a quick guide for citing sources. You can find the link to the Chicago Manual of Style Online under "Citing Sources" on the library's website.

RefWorks Workshops for Faculty, Staff and Students

RefWorks is web-based bibliographic software that allows researchers to collect references from anywhere, at any time, and turn them into a personalized database. Users may automatically import references from online databases, manually import references, manage references using folders and easily generate formatted bibliographies into research papers, grants, or articles. The University of Richmond Libraries will offer the following workshops on how to get started with RefWorks. Dates and times are:Wednesday, November 1, 4-5 p.m. and Tuesday, November 14, 4-5 p.m. Both classes will be held in the Computer Classroom, Basement Level 2, Boatwright Library. The Music Library is now podcasting!

The Libraries are pleased to announce the availability of a campus-wide site license to The Chronicle’s web site. All campus computers can access The Chronicle’s web pages without a username or password. You may read both current articles and archives back to 1989. Basement Levels of Boatwright Are Now Open!

Basement Levels 1 and 2 are now open for study and computer use. Group study rooms are also available and keys to the rooms may be checked out at the Main Service Desk. Basement Level 1 has been designated as Quiet Study and Basement Level 2 is for group study.

China-America Festival of Film and Culture

New! Library Account Login

Take a look at the new, easy login box for your library account on the library's web site at library.richmond.edu. Just type in your university ID number and your last name and you will be able to renew library materials, read e-reserves, view titles that you have saved for further reference in your "bookbag" file, access interlibrary loan, etc.

RSS Updates for New Books in the University Libraries!

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Feeds are now available for new book titles in the University Libraries. RSS provide a way for users to receive a list of newly received book titles through a RSS or Blog Reader.

Times Digital Archives are purchased for the University Libraries' collections

The University Libraries have recently added the Times Digital Archive, 1785-1985 to its growing collection of full-text, digital newspapers. The Archive is the complete, full-text facsimile of the original Times of London. Connect to the Archive on the library's web site at through the UR Library Catalog or Online Databases links.

Library Document Delivery Service

Library Document Delivery Service Document Delivery is available to all UR faculty. It is also now available to staff on a trial basis through the fall 2006 semester. Books and journal articles held in Boatwright or the Music Library can be requested for work related purposes. E-Audiobooks from NetLibrary are digital versions of recorded books from the latest best sellers (fiction and non-fiction) and award winning authors. New Public Computers

The libraries are currently receiving new computers to replace the existing ones available to the public. New, larger monitors (17in.) are being installed as well. The new computers will sit on the work surface, underneath the monitor thus providing easy access to USB ports as well as the front-mounted headphone jack. The computers will continue to automatically connect to each individual user's shared network drive on NetFiles. Please see the Main Service Desk for assistance.

Library Renovation -- Summer 2006

During the summer of 2006, the University will renovate the B1 and B2 levels of Boatwright Library. These floors house the circulation books collection, the science reference collection, and the science bound periodicals. The renovation will increase group and quiet individual space and allow growth space for the book collections. Upcoming Deadlines for Jackson and Modlin Awards

Deadlines for both the Jackson and Modlin Awards are April 10, 2006. The James W. Jackson Award for Excellence in Library Research in the Social Science is to recognize and encourage excellence in the use of library research skills in the social sciences. The Modlin Book Award was established by the faculty in 1971 to honor Dr. George M. Modlin upon his retirement as President of the University, to promote scholarly personal libraries, and to encourage undergraduate students to collect books pertaining to their particular areas of interest.

The University Libraries have recently purchased subscription access to The Gallup Brain, a searchable, living record of 70 years of public opinion. Inside, you'll find answers to more than 136,000 questions, and responses from more than 3.5 million people interviewed by The Gallup Poll since 1935.This unparalleled public opinion database also houses Gallup Poll News Service articles, Gallup Poll Tuesday Briefing articles, and Gallup Management Journal articles that feature in-depth public opinion and management data analyses. ArtStor Adds Images of Islamic Art

Artstor (digital image database) has recently announced an agreement to collaborate on the distribution of up to 25,000 high quality digital images of the art and architecture of Islam from the personal archives of a team of leading scholar photographers in this field: Sheila Blair, Jonathan Bloom and Walter B. Denny. The first 1,646 images have now been integrated into the Image Gallery. Connect to Artstor through ONLINE DATBASES on the library's web site.

New Headphones

Boatwright Library has new headphones available for checkout at the Main Service Desk for use at the library's public computers. Each computer has a headphone jack on the front of the tower. You can adjust the volume by using the control within your application, or by clicking on the speaker icon in the task tray on the Windows tool bar.

17th Annual Peple Lecture, Tuesday, February 21, 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Marita Golden will deliver the 17th Annual Edward Edward C. and Mary S. Peple Lecture on “The Writers’ Voice and Authority, ‘Who Said You Couldn’t Say That?”’.Golden is a novelist, writing teacher and founder of the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation. The lecture is sponsored by the Friends of Boatwright Memorial Library. The event will take place on Tuesday, February 21, 7:30 p.m. in Jepson 118.

Library Database of the Week: EUROPA WORLD

Europa World provides extensive statistics, historical materials, biographical and geographical, and business information for countries all over the world. This online version of the world renowned Europa Yearbook also has MS Excel capabilities for downloading statistical data. Choose ONLINE DATABASES on the library's web site and then choose EUROPA WORLD.

New Library Photocopiers

The two older photocopiers on the second floor of Boatwright Library were recently replaced with brand new copiers from Oce. One unit is geared for photocopying documents and features a document feeder. The other copier is designed for books and features a sloped copying area which prevents book spines from being damaged. They are both great improvements over the units that we had. If you require assistance while using them, you can obtain help at the Periodicals Help Desk, or downstairs at the Main Service Desk. A help phone is also available in the area which rings directly downstairs.

“Radical Militant Librarians”

Both National Public Radio and the New York Times reported on 12/13/05 on the top secret FISA courts, FBI and radical, militant librarians. Some agents at the FBI have been frustrated by what they see as the Justice Department’s reluctance to let them demand records and to use other far-ranging investigative measures in terrorism cases, newly disclosed e-mail messages and internal documents show. “While radical militant librarians kick us around, true terrorists benefit from OIPR’s failure to let us use the tools given to us,” read the e-mail message, which was sent by an unidentified FBI official. “This should be an OIPR priority!!!” For more information on the Patriot Act, the FBI in your library, connect to “Take Action” on the American Library Association’s web site.

Full text digital access to the New York Times is available from your desktop. Years covered include 1851 – 2002 and additional years are added as they are digitized. Some 3.5 million pages are included with illustrations and graphics. Current access to the NYT is available via LexisNexis.

Can You Trust Wikipedia?

In this October 24, 2005 article from the British newspaper, The Guardian, subject experts were asked for opinions about sections of the popular online, open access encyclopedia Wikipedia, in the wake of "the founder of the online encyclopedia ... admitt[ing] some of its entries are 'a horrific embarrassment.'" Includes ratings and comments on specific entries.

NoodleBib Citation Builder

The Libraries have recently acquired NoodleBib (citation builder software) which helps students create bibliographies that comply with the rules of the current MLA Handbook and APA Publication Manual. The Turabian format will be added in the near future. The program prompts the user for particular parts of the citation, takes care of punctuation, alphabetization and formatting, and produces a list ready to import into a Word document. New Features in Library Catalog

Look for new, descriptive features in the UR Library Catalog as you search for recently published books and DVDs. You can view cover images as well as summaries, book reviews, tables of contents, chapter excerpts and author information. Just click on the title and then choose "More Information". Try a sample search in the catalog using the book title, Small Wonder by Barbara Kingsolver.

One Book, One Campus: Dialogues in Social Justice

Boatwright Library is a partner with the campus wide effort to read Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria by Dr. Beverly Tatum. Throughout the 2005-2006 academic year, students, staff and faculty are invited to take one hour out of their schedules to meet together and discuss how racial identity is formed and how it influences our relationships with one another. The book discussions this fall will revolve around Part 1 and Chapter 7. These excerpts are available via the Library Reserves under "One Book, One Campus". The World War I Years: America Becomes a World Power

Boatwright Memorial Library is hosting a free film viewing and discussion series called “The World War I Years: America Becomes a World Power.” Led by Dr. John Treadway (History Department), the series uses documentary films and text to engage the public in a discussion of the political and social history of the United States in the early 20^th century. Banned Books Week: Celebrate the Freedom to Read!

Faculty, students, and librarians will celebrate the right to read during Banned Books Week. On Tuesday, September 27, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM we will have a Read Out, reading aloud from books that have been challenged or banned. At 1:00 Rod Smolla, dean of the Law School and 1st Amendment expert, will speak on the 1933 federal court case that ended the U.S. ban on importing James Joyce's Ulysses. At 2:00 Sen. H. Russell Potts, Jr., will speak and entertain questions. Come to Adams Auditorium at 4:00 for a showing of Fahrenheit 451. Come and celebrate our freedom to read! (Rain location is old game room in the Commons.)

Group Study Rooms Upgraded in Boatwright Library

Two “state of the art” group study rooms were renovated and updated over the summer on the second floor of Boatwright Library.  Bullet tables, plasma screens, computers and DVDs were installed to accommodate study group facilitation.  These rooms will serve as “test models” for further renovations on Basement Levels 1 and 2.

Library Subscribes to Diversity Database Suite

The University Libraries acquired the Diversity Database Suite in July 2005. This suite of online full-text databases includes GenderWatch, Alt-Press Watch and Ethnic News Watch. GenderWatch is a full-text database incorporating archival material on women and gender issues dating back to 1970. Ethnic News Watch provides comprehensive access to the ethnic, minority and native press in the United States from 1960 to the present. Alt-Press Watch is a full-text database of newspapers, magazines, journals and newsletters of the alternative and independent press from 1995 to the present. Connect to Online Databases on the library's web site to search the individual databases.

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is the subject of many useful web sites, some of the best are listed below:

Yahoo News offers one of the most comprehensive collections of links, updated continuously. Video, audio, news, blogs and emergency information sources for New Orleans, Louisiana, Mississippi, and the Gulf Coast are all included.
Katrina News for Louisiana from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana offers many specific links for small town information in Louisiana, as well as New Orleans.
Hurricane Katrina 2005 from the Yahoo Directory offers collected links to Blogs, Missing Person and Survivor lists, Photographs and Videos, and Relief Efforts.
Hurricane Katrina Recovery from FirstGov, the Federal Government web portal, with particular emphasis on information for victims, those seeking missing persons, and those needing relief effort information.
Several sites that are devoted to Katrina recovery information from Mississippi include the Jackson Channel, Gulf Coast News , and the Sun-Herald.
Hurricane Central offers Weather channel information on past, present, and upcoming hurricanes of this season, including Katrina.
The American Association of Museums web site offers updated reports on the condition of museums and historical sites affected by Katrina's devastation.

New Search Interfaces for Library Databases

New search interfaces are now available for several popular library databases, including PsycINFO, ERIC, Medline, Religion Database, PAIS and Econlit. These changes took place because of the library's consortial agreements with the Virtual Library in Virginia (VIVA). The cover of the June 2005 issue of College & Research Libraries News features an illustration from the Helen A. Monsell Mother Goose Collection in the Special Collections of the University of Richmond Libraries. The image of Old Mother Goose is from the dust jacket cover of Mother Goose: The Old Nursery Rhymes. The Monsell Collection of more than 250 items on the theme of Mother Goose throughout the world, from the early 19th century through the 1960s, was collected by the noted Virginia author, Helen Albee Monsell (1895-1971) who wrote more than 30 children's books and plays.

Summer International Film Series

Four films will be shown during the month of June. The series is free and open to the public. All Friday showings begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Adams Auditorium of Boatwright Memorial Library. All Sunday showings begin at 7:30 p.m. in Jepson Hall 118.

Computer Availability at Boatwright Library

Students, you may use the following link (on-campus access only) to check the availability of computers in Boatwright Library: http://barley.richmond.edu:9000/LabMachineStatusServer/LabView. Links to this web page will also be available on the Libraries' web site and the Information Services web site. Once you connect to the page, just click on "image" and use the legend at the bottom of the page to see the status of each PC. You may also check on computer availability at the Main Service Desk in the library. Please note that you may not reserve any of these computers. All of them are first-come, first-serve and classes will override use in the Boatwright Computer classroom. We hope this pilot project will be helpful to you during the last few weeks of the semester.

Celebrate History! Women’s History Week originated in 1978 when a week in March was selected to coincide with International Women’s Day — March 8 — celebrated since 1911. In 1987, the National Women's History Project petitioned Congress to expand the "Week" into a monthlong celebration. Connect to these resources about women, including biographies, a quiz and a timeline.

LibQUAL + ™: National Library Service Survey Launches March 15th!

The University Libraries are participating for the second time in the national LibQUAL + ™ survey. This online survey measures library users’ satisfaction with collections and services. All full time faculty and students should participate. The results will be used to improve services and plan for the future of the libraries. The feedback that was gained in 2002 when the libraries participated for the first time in this survey was used to extend hours of operation in Boatwright and to plan for further renovations. Your feedback on this survey will be equally important. Students are eligible to win one of three Best Buy gift cards for filling out the survey.

Quiet Study & Group Study in Boatwright Library

Please note that QUIET STUDY is designated for the 2nd floor in Boatwright. If study groups need to talk, they should meet on the first floor or ask for a group study room at the Main Service Desk. Librarians cannot “police” all conversations, so we encourage students to alert library staff at the Main Service Desk if students are talking on the second floor and we will remind them to remain quiet. We also hope students will encourage one another to respect quiet space in the library. Cell phone conversations should take place in front of the coffee shop or on the patio outside the library. Thank you for your cooperation!

Student Message Board in Boatwright

Use the new message board in Boatwright Library to communicate with your study groups or study partner. The message kiosk is located next the elevator on the first floor of the library. You can use magnets to post paper notes or use the whiteboard. Please do not stand in the Main Service Desk area to meet other students. Thanks for your cooperation!

Black History Month Resources

With the start of Black History Month, the Libraries invite you to enjoy free Black History Month resources from Thomson Gale Publishers. Highlights include biographies of famous African Americans and a Black History Month quiz. Many of the featured resources are available in the University of Richmond Libraries.

Library Exhibit: "Movers and Shakers" African-American Writers and Artists from the Harlem Renaissance to the 1980's"

In celebration of National Black History Month, Boatwright Library's Special Collections presents the exhibit "Movers and Shakers: African-American Writers and Artists from the Harlem Renaissance to the 1980's." The exhibition of autographed, first edition books, many with dust jackets, by Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, James Weldon Johnson, Richard Wright, Ishmael Reed, James Baldwin and Toni Morrison is on display on the second floor of Boatwright Library through March 4.

Search Engine Users are Unaware and Naïve

The Pew Internet and American Life Project reports that adults online in the U.S. are generally naive when it comes to how search engines work. The study found that only one in six users of Internet search engines could tell the difference between unbiased search results and paid advertisements.

Tsunami Information Web Page

The University of Richmond Libraries have created a link to federal government information resources about the recent tsunami disaster in the Indian Ocean rim. You can also connect to this web page from the Libraries' Government Information Page.

Media Resource Center Extends Evening Hours

The Media Resource Center (MRC) in Boatwright Memorial Library has extended its hours open this semester until midnight, Sunday through Thursday. Please note that the MRC will continue to close at 5 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

New Library Web Site

The library’s new web site debuted on January 3, 2005. The new web page address is: http://library.richmond.edu/, so you will need to change bookmark and link addresses for the library’s resources. Users will find the same content on the site, but we hope the new layout will make it easier to find our sources and services. Ahmanson Foundation Awards Grant to Parsons Music Library

Parsons Music Library has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Ahmanson Foundation for the purchase of audio and video recordings of opera, as well as books that explore the multiple layers of meaning resulting from opera’s hybrid nature. Although the inspiration for this grant is a new music course, "Opera and the History of Collaboration," which will be taught by Dr. Ruth Longobardi in spring 2005, we hope that other faculty will find ways to incorporate these new library materials into their teaching and research, particularly as they stimulate creativity in areas with less obvious connections to music.

Library 101 Registration Information for First Year Students

FIRST YEAR STUDENTS: Now that you have completed Library 100, you need to register for LIBRARY 101 for spring semester. There are 42 sections of Library 101 listed on BANNERWEB. Please register for one of the sections that fits with your schedule. Then make a note in your calendar of the Library 101 meeting time.

Treasures of Boatwright Library

Stop by and view the "Treasures of Boatwright Restored", an exhibit of books from the Boatwright Library Special Collections on the second floor of the library. The exhibit includes rare and unique items that have been restored, conserved and preserved over the course of some thirty years with the generous support and funding of the Friends of the Boatwright Memorial Library. The exhibit includes a rare copy of Virgil's Publii Virgilii Maronis, published in London in 1658 and presented by the U.S. Consul of Naples to Dr. J.L.M. Curry for the Richmond College Library in 1890; and a copy of The Addisonian Miscellany, with writings by the English essayist Joseph Addison, published in Boston in 1801 and beautifully restored by Master Hand Bookbinder John Field. The exhibit extends through December 2004.

Students Flock to Boatwright Library!

Recent gate count statistics reveal that student use of the library in September 2004 has increased 57.5% over September 2003. Over 69,000 entries into the library were recorded from September 1 - 30.

Laptop Checkout in Boatwright Library

18 laptops are available for student use in the library at the Main Service Desk. Students may present their university ID and check out the laptop for 4 hours. Due to heavy use, laptops may not be renewed. Students are also encouraged to bring in their own laptops and connect to the wireless network in the library. The Main Service Desk can also check out wireless network cards for laptops that are not wireless ready.

International Film Series Begins 16th Season

The International Film Series begins its 16th season this week with the showing of film Osama, winner of the 2004 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. Writer/director Siddiq Barmak makes his film debut with Osama which was the first all-Afghan feature released since the end of the Taliban rule. The film is not only a vital social document, but also an intense, moving film centering on a girl who must disguise herself as a boy so her family can survive. The show times are Thursday, September 23, 7:00 p.m., Jepson Hall 118; Friday, September 24, 3:00 p.m., Adams Auditorium (Boatwright Library/MRC); and Sunday, September 26, 7:00 p.m., Jepson Hall 118.

Josephine Nunnally Gift Benefits Boatwright Library

Boatwright Library has received a significant gift from the estate of alumna Josephine Nunnally. Her bequest of $100,000 has been placed in the Book-a-Year fund where it will grow in perpetuity. The Book a Year fund was established in 2003 as a restricted endowment fund; its income will be used to purchase books, journals, and other materials for the libraries. Miss Nunnally, a Richmond native, graduated from Westhampton College in 1931. After earning a master’s degree in library science, she returned to the University and served as a cataloger from 1938 until her retirement in 1975. New Interlibrary Loan System Beginning Fall 2004!

UR Libraries recently introduced a new system for requesting books and articles via interlibrary loan. The interlibrary loan webpage has also been redesigned in order to communicate this new method! The new system will automatically add your personal information (name, etc.) to your request, which leaves just the information about the item to be entered. Users will now also be emailed when their books arrive and articles will automatically be emailed directly to the requestor! For further information visit:

Early American Newspapers, Digital

Through a generous gift by Edwin S. Snead, III, the Libraries now have access to the digital collection of the Early American Newspapers. This collection provides access to newspaper articles on history, culture, religion, commerce, education, politics, etc. from the Colonial period through the Civil War. Date coverage includes 1690 – 1876. The database will eventually include more than 1 million pages from newspapers. Early American Newspapers is available under "Online Databases" and through the UR Library Catalog on the Libraries’ web site.

After 90 years, The Collegian Goes Digital

The Collegian is the University's student newspaper that has been in publication since 1914. It consists of 90 volumes and over 22,000 pages. Until now, the back issues of The Collegian could be accessed only at the Virginia Baptist Historical Society on microfilm. Now it is available online, fulltext searchable, with the ability to view the full article. Over 90 years content can be browsed or searched by keyword. Explore the Collegian Archive: 1914-2003.

New York Times Reports on Google's Impact on Libraries

The June 21, 2004 issue of the New York Times reports on the three year study by Electronic Publishing Initiative at Columbia University that concluded that electronic resources have become the main tool for information gathering, particularly among undergraduates. Not only has the web become popular with students, but with faculty as well. In the Columbia survey, 90 percent of the faculty members who responded said they used electronic resources in their research several times a week or more.In response, librarians at Carnegie Melon, the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and other organizations are trying to bring material that search engines like Google have missed from the deep Web to the surface. In recent months, dozens of research libraries began working with Google and other search engines to help put their collections within reach of a broader public.

New University ID Cards

Effective June 28, 2004, the university will begin to use new, randomly generated ID numbers on university ID cards. Library users should be aware that beginning June 28, one must have a new University ID card to: 1) Renew books online and view your library account information using the My Account feature on the UR Library Catalog 2) Check out books using the Self-Check and 3) Quickly check out books at the library’s main service desk. As of September 30, old ID cards will be turned off and will no longer grant access to campus buildings or services. ID Card pickup Schedule is scheduled for June 28 – July 9, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the One Card Office, Room 300 of Tyler Hanes Commons Building.

World War II Documents from the Boatwright Library Federal Depository Collection
Government-published pamphlets explaining why America went to war, the U.S. relationship to Allied and Axis countries, and how soldiers could adjust to post-war life are now offered for permanent public view in a University of Richmond library online collection, "America at War 1941-45," beginning Memorial Day (May 31). The 60 documents are part of a larger collection of about 250, which Richmond's Boatwright Memorial Library eventually will digitize and make accessible via the Internet.
