Upcoming Deadlines for Jackson and Modlin Awards
Deadlines for both the Jackson and Modlin Awards are April 10, 2006. The James W. Jackson Award for Excellence in Library Research in the Social Science is to recognize and encourage excellence in the use of library research skills in the social sciences. The Modlin Book Award was established by the faculty in 1971 to honor Dr. George M. Modlin upon his retirement as President of the University, to promote scholarly personal libraries, and to encourage undergraduate students to collect books pertaining to their particular areas of interest.

Library Database of the Week: Gallup Brain
The University Libraries have recently purchased subscription access to The Gallup Brain, a searchable, living record of 70 years of public opinion. Inside, you'll find answers to more than 136,000 questions, and responses from more than 3.5 million people interviewed by The Gallup Poll since 1935.This unparalleled public opinion database also houses Gallup Poll News Service articles, Gallup Poll Tuesday Briefing articles, and Gallup Management Journal articles that feature in-depth public opinion and management data analyses. Replicas of historical news stories and press releases are available as well. The Gallup Brian is available under ONLINE DATABASES and the UR LIBRARY CATALOG on the library's web site.

Remember! Boatwright Library now offers 24/7 Service
The 1st and 2nd floors of Boatwright Library are open for 24/7 study for UR students, staff and faculty. Library services end at 1 a.m., Sunday – Thursday and at 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, but users may stay past those hours to study on the first and second floors. Two security guards check university ID cards and patrol the building between 1 a.m. – 8 a.m. (Sunday – Thursday) and between 9 p.m. – 11 a.m. (Friday –Saturday).

Are We Safer in the Dark? A Sunshine Week National Dialogue on Open Government and Secrecy
Plan to attend this teleconference sponsored by the University of Richmond Libraries, the Law Library, and the Center for Civic Engagement. The teleconference will be held in the Jepson Alumni Center -Rosenbaum Room on Monday, March 13, 2006 from 1:00 -2:30 p.m. A discussion will follow from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. , led by Frosty Landon, Executive Director, Virginia Coalition for OpenGovernment. This event is free and open to the public.
